Actual development of Ponte Vedra Beach as a resort community began during 1928. In that year, a log clubhouse and a nine-hole golf course were built. An additional nine-holes were constructed several years later and the ground work for this favored resort was complete. From the society pages of the Florida Times-Union to the private parties of Jacksonville's prominent citizens, word soon spread of this newest playground.

The splendid new Inn facing the shore road and Atlantic Ocean was opened and a flow of enthusiastic guests were ushered in by a glowing review in the Princeton letter. With Frank Rogers at the helm, a staff was formed with the philosophy of "treat every guest as though you were entertaining them in your own home."
High praises have showered the Ocean Course from the very beginning. In a 1938 Golf Magazine article, Ponte Vedra's Ocean Course, Pebble Beach (CA), Oakmont (PA), and Pine Valley (NJ) are featured as the "Hardest Courses in America." In 1942, after completing a match on the Ocean Course, golf legend Bobby Jones commented, "it's a course to challenge professionals".
